It is proof that some things, if you are precise enough, and patient enough, and honest enough about what they are worth, cannot be taken from you permanently.
They can be moved. They can be displaced. They can be carried by the wrong hands through the wrong rooms for a season.
But they come back.
At the end of the fiscal year, the Hart Foundation reported its highest single-year fundraising total in its history. My mother attributed it to what she called “renewed public confidence in the leadership.” When the journalist pressed for specifics, she smiled — the particular smile she had worn at the gala, calm and absolute — and said:
“People give to organizations they trust. We’ve always been trustworthy. Sometimes it just takes an audience.”
